5 Disadvantages of Hard Water at Home

Hard water refers to the water which does not lather easily with soap because it contains dissolved salts of magnesium and calcium. These two salts are responsible for the hardness of the water. Hard water has advantages and disadvantages. In this article, I have discussed the disadvantages of using hard water at home.

1.EFFECT ON BATHROOM FITTINGS AND KITCHENWARE

When hard water get to react with soap it forms a scum which destroys kitchenware, tiles, sinks, bathroom fittings etc. Some of the effects it causes to the bathroom and kitchen fittings are: blackening fittings limescale deposits in the domestic appliances increase of electricity bills clogging plumbing fixtures and pipes.

2.EFFECT ON LAUNDRY

Hard water weakens the clothes and also shortens its life. This is because the tiny mineral salts in the water react with soap hence destroying the clothes. Using hard water for laundry makes the cloth’s fabric to shorten, its colour to fade.

3.EFFECT ON SKIN

Do you have experience skin irritation after a bath? Do you have a dry skin? Is your skin itchy or flaky? Well, you might not understand why you experience this but it can be effects of hard water for shower. Because hard water has a lot of it, it is hard for other substances to dissolve in it, hence forming a residue and the resultant effects are the skin dryness and irritation.

4.EFFECT ON WATER HEATERS

Do you use water heater at your home? Indeed you do. do you mind the type of water you heat using the water heater? The efficiency of the water heater is greatly reduced(it becomes 30% inefficient) if you use hard water. This is due to the formation of the scale.

5.EFFECT ON SURFACE MATERIALS

When hard water passes through surface materials, it leaves behind deposits of minerals. These minerals attach to the surfaces resulting in a scaly and crusty build up which may become difficult or impossible to remove. Limescale can gradually damage the surface on marble granite and even glass.
